I need a break

I’ve teamed up with Chobani Greek Yogurt. They’re launching a campaign: #breakyoumake this month to promote Chobani Flips.

Part of the campaign is to recognize people who truly need a break and they asked me if I could recognize someone here on my blog. The winner gets a bunch of Chobani Flips and the blog post featured on: www.breakyoumake.com.

So this is my blog nomination:

Everyone deserves a break — from my mom, my husband, my sister with two kids, my brother, the President, the teenager working at McDonald’s after school.

But, to be honest — if I were to choose one person — that person would be, me.

Yes, me. I need a break. Is that selfish?

Here’s my defense:

I’m a busy, tired, sleep deprived mom pretty much everyday. At this stage in motherhood, (being the mom of a 19 month-old girl), my role is relational — meaning, I do a lot for others, and not much for myself. (Can you hear the violin playing yet?)

As a stay-at-home mom, I cook to keep my family’s tummies filled, I breastfeed my daughter, I clean, I drive people to places, I do laundry.

But, more than all that, I share along with my husband, the responsibility of creating a civilized, smart, kind, productive member of society that will one day be out there in the world. That is nerve-wrecking.

I teach her how to eat, use the potty, put things back in their place, calm down when she is having a tantrum, how to speak.

This is going to be interesting…

We play games that promote a love of learning, independence, and imagination. This is fun, but can also be tiring and requires a crazy amount of patience.

There is little time for me — for moms in general, especially at this day in age when moms are labeled as “Super Moms.” That’s a lot of pressure.

And technology… said to simplify and makes our lives easier, only depletes our energy and makes life more chaotic.

Despite the whirlwind of the my daily grind, I actually see it as my way of making the world a better place.

I really do.

All I detect is…mischief.

But here’s the thing. We mamas need to ask for what we want. Declare it.  If we need a break, we give the break to someone else, if someone needs help, we reach out and help before we help ourselves, if someone in our family is sick, we are there with open arms and chicken soup.

My point is that we don’t need permission to take a break.

Don't ask...

Don’t ask…

I want to nominate myself because if I win, all moms win.

It’s weird though isn’t it? To nominate myself.

I guess I’m picturing someone reading right now, going “oookay…crazy lady.”

But, it would be contradictory to nominate anyone else. My message here on the blog, and Chobani’s is a similar: #BreakYouMake.

It means we need to slow down, take a step back and give ourselves the breaks we need our frazzled minds and tired bodies are desperately yearning. We need those moments to recharge, and notice the beauty around.

Best pals! (Oh here’s a picture ofme with my 90’s Alanis Morisette hair!)
